Most widescreen films will have one of two aspect ratios, either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. If the film is 1.85:1, then it will perfectly fill a 16:9 widescreen tv. If the film is 2.35:1 (as is X-Men) then even with a 16:9 widescreen tv, you will still get small black bars (normally about 1") at the top and bottom of the screen.
If you look at most DVD's they all say 16:9 or widescreen enhanced but usually they then say somewhere what the aspect ratio is, either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. A bit misleading to say the least!.
There is no way around this problem via a DVD player or PS2 but if you own a newish widescreen tv you can usually stretch the picture (Sony call it SMART mode) but then you end up with thinnish looking people. The choice is yours!!!
Hope this helps :-)
Best of luck
