These are basically similar to the normal DVD rental shops, but instead of going in when you want to get a film, you pay a monthly fee and pick a (constantly updated) list of around 20 or so films you want to watch. Once the 2 or 3 you are sent have been watched, you just send them back, either one at a time or together, free of charge and instantly get a new film from your list.
The lists themselves can be put in to order of importance, so you can technically have the next three picked out, though these will be substituted for ones further down the list if they are not available. The discs take only a day or two to be sent out and received, making it possible to watch a fair few movies each month (if, of course, you have the time!).
I tried out www.screen-select.co.uk for 30 days and managed to watch 9 films before I cancelled my free subscription. The discs were sent out quickly and I could pre-order ones which hadn't been released at the time. The service itself is so easy to use and, provided you can get to a post box, pretty fast too. My one concern was that one of the DVDs would get lost in the post, but they do state that this is covered unless it keeps happening.
The state of the DVDs I recieved varied, one was scratched so badly that I couldn't watch it, but I sent this back and got a replacement. The rest were fine, though a few looked like they'd seen better days.
So, the actual DVD rental system works quite well, but I found that I couldn't tell what would be sent next until it was actually sent out, which caused a problem when friends were coming around to watch a film. It's a great idea for people who watch lots of films and spend loads on DVD rentals, but not for mere mortals like myself, who just want to watch a few films!
