I first saw this movie when it was new, over a decade ago I'd guess, but I couldn't remember it at all. It was on Sky Movies the other night, so I watched it again, and my God, if that isn't one of the worst movies of all time...

Okay, heres the story. John Hurt is a scientist in the year 2031. He's invented a new weapon, but the side effects are time slips. It just so happens that John Hurt gets sucked into one of these, along with his amazing future car. He back in the days of Frankenstein, just after the monster has been created.

He gets to hang out with the Doctor, as well as Mary Shelly, and Lord Byron.

First off: Worst monster ever. Frankenstein's monster asks "What is mur-der?" at one point in the movie, yet understands much more complex orders when barked at him by Frankenstein, and tries to bargain with the Doctor. Plus, it looks completely crap. It's face is pinned in strange places, and it has long ginger hair.

The 'romance' between Mary Shelley and John Hurt is completely ridiculous - he shows her the book she's yet to write, and drives her around in his car. It features lines like "I've never known anyone like you before!" "That's because I don't exist yet!" and "Byron talks about free love, I practice it..."

Half of the time, it looks like they're in a movie studio, on a set, especially towards the end with the experiment, as John Hurt nearly falls off of it.

The effects are crappy, especially when the Doc's girlfriend if ripped in half.

Plus the ending is naff, featuring completely pointless lasers.

And if you don't think it sounds that bad, early on there's a scene featuring some kids chanting, and burying a bike.

Anyone else seen this? Damn it was crappy.

I remember my Mum rented this one out a fair while ago thinking it was the Kenneth Branagh version, which was out about the same time. We where all surprised when the movie started in the distant future though, and for one brief minute I though the movie would actually be a pretty cool modern adaptation setting the Frankenstein story in modern time. But no, it soon became like an extended episode of Quantum Leap, only nowhere near as good.

The movie just didn’t seem to want me to like it, there where numerous, stupid little things in it, such as the speaking car Hurt brings back with him, which he isn’t afraid to use to permanently screw up Earths timeline with. I just never got the point of the whole time travel setting, it completely confused the film. Sure it seems like yet another retelling of the age-old Frankenstein story, but it has a bloke in it from the future with his talking car??

A stupid film, especially the end where Hurt and Frankenstein walk around some crappy looking post apocalyptic ruins, where Frankenstein was finally defeated by some green lights. Utterly stupid movie.
