"Want a cd key.."

Hey, im thinking of purchasing some 5.1/6.1 speakers for my dvd and my pc. I wanted some advice on setting them up, and which ones to get for my specific needs.

Ok, its quite a smallish room, not like a large hall or anything.

My soundcard has optical/coxial ins and outs as well as 5.1.
My DVD player has optical coxial outs and 5.1 decoded outs.

I was looking at Creatives Inspire 6700's and Logitech Z640 Speakers. Both are prices at about 50-60quid.

http://www.logitech.co.uk

For the tech specs.

I was going to connect the speakers to my soundcard, then connect the optical out of my dvd player to the soundcard. So I could have music/games or dvd sound at the flick of a few switches. The 6700's have a little remote and headphone jack, which is useful because my dvd player or tv doesnt have a headphone jack. (I have some Sennheisers)

Now, my cd player has packed up, so I was thinking about using my computer/dvd as a cd/mp3 music sort of station as well. Which would be the best place to play my cd's from? The cd drive yea? What would the dvd sound be like via the optical out? Should I connect the dvd players decoded 5.1 out to the speakers or what?

Can any help me out here?

Thanks

Ok thanks guys, nah the 5.1 is decoded inside the dvd player. So I guess it has, but its not a seperate external one.

Mmhm, well the Creatives retail for around 100 quidish, ebuyer.com for reviews, 24 5 star reviews!

But I see what you mean about speakers that are ment for pc but are used for other stuff.

Read those reviews :) Thanks guys

I think the price is ok for some speakers especially for a small room. If you had a ton of money you would go for £5000 speakers but as it is you got to get what you can afford. I have a DVD set from Argos which I got last summer, its was £90 and had a 5.1 Decoder as my DVD player hasnt got one and with a DVD film I only have ever had it under half volume as its too loud. Bass should be ok with these as those Creative Labs ones will really pump it out, may not be as much as a decent speaker kit, but your filling up a small room not a opera house.

The one thing to make sure is that the way you set it up will work. Has your DVD player got a built in 5.1 decoder? If not then you may need one which means chosing a more expensive set.

I would say that Alastair has a point about getting ones for the PC as you may find ones that arent specifically for a PC that are better.

Yeah, ALASTAIR is right.

I find my 5 speakers and subwoofer at 50W each and 100W (respectively) work just dandy for DVD's and CD's, and they only cost £200 with the DVD player (It was an offer though at Xmas).

All connected using those funkeh coloured 2-wire plugs on back of DVD player.

It will be a complete bag of toss if its £50-60. NEVER buy ones specifically designed for PC gaming as they will suck with limited bass range and a limited rang of audio channels.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
