When on the internet with one of the computers I use, every now again it stops, says the remote call procedure has abruptly terminated, and shuts the pc down after a minute.

Sounds like the good ol' MSBlaster virus. Turn on the internet firewall in Windows (can't remember how) and got to McAffee's or Norton's website to download a stinger/virus checker.
Sorry for the vagueness, but I've never actually experienced this so I don't know the full procedure.
