I’ve come across an odd problem on PC that seemed to have start yesterday. Essentially, I’m loosing hard drive space and I don’t know where it’s going.

Yesterday I noticed this problem when I got a low disk space warning which I found odd since I had nearly 3gig left the last time I looked. I haven’t installed anything new onto the drive (I use my backup drive to install things like games) and if I have installed something, it’s certainly not been over 3gig.

I don’t know what this problem is, I’ve tried a disk clean up, deleted whatever spyware was on my PC and even uninstalled a few programs that should have freed up plenty of room yet it hasn’t changed a thing. I’m still under a gig on my C drive and it’s continuing to decrease.

So my dilemma, what do I do and more importantly, if anyone can help, what’s causing it? I’m planning a defrag later but in case that doesn’t work I’ll need to find an alternative solution. In the meantime I’ll have to install and divert downloads into my D drive while I figure out what the problem is and the best solution to it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well what ever caused it I've somehow managed to stop. My C drive is back up to 1.5gig and not decreasing, though I'm sure I should have plenty more space than that.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll go hunting for this missing Hard Drive space in the morning, I just hope I don't stumble on any Granny Porn ~:-{

The TEMP file might be where your problem is lying.

How about Run -> "CLEANMGR"?

EDIT: Nevermind, you already have.

Do a scan disk to see if the values have been incorrectly calculated.

Also look for some remnants. I found a temp file in a folder in My Documents that was several gigabytes in size. And it was ancient. Sometimes you just get weird stuff.

1. Right-click on Documents and Settings -> Properties
2. "Oh my god, 15GB"
3. Right-click on all folders in Documents and Settings -> Properties
4. "It seems my brothers account accouts for 14.8GB of that"
5. Right-click on brothers My Documents -> Properties
6. "Wow, 14.7GB"
7. Repeat until vast collection of Granny porn is discovered.
8. Enjoy.

Or something like that. Basically try and track down any folders that are growing/much too big, starting from C:/

How would I go about doing a Manual Survey?

Do a manual survey of the folders on your computer to find out what is growing, or is bigger than it should be.
