Anyway, I'm getting my PC modded and ready for doing my 4th year honours project.
Going to do plenty of overtime during the summer to get it up to spec.
Well, it will be staying at an Athlon XP 2400+, with 512Mb PC2100 RAM, but hey, that's good enough for what I need to do. I will be spending £200-£300 on a grpahics card, and maybe getting a black flat screen monitor by the end of the summer though :D

Bloody hell, prudence on this forum! Someone take a photo!
Everything will be cheaper by the time September comes round anyway, and there is still a good chance that I might be using my PS2 linux kit for my project rather than my PC anyway, if that's the case, I'll spend my money more wisely.
My PC is effectively an internet and programming box at the moment, I never play games on it, enjoy playin gon Xbox Live and my PS2 too much :D
I would, however, like to have a PC whichj will at least pretend to make Half Life 2 and Doom 3 look nice :)
Don't think my poor 64MB ATI 9000 Pro will cut it ;)

Not strapped to a XP2400 with 512MB PC2100 it won't. High-end graphics cards only ever function as penis extensions, the extra power is rarely used until the card has halved in price, making the purchase foolish. Additionally, you'll need an £800 TFT to actually display 1600x1200, and anti-aliasing has virtually no effect at that resolution.
Besides, you're not going to have much time to actually play games in your final year. I speak from experience :S
Or you could just get a cheap 9600PRO

The Nvidia 6800 Ultra outperforms the 9800 by double the frame rate on many games at 1600*1200 WITH 4*AF & AA.
Anandtech said so :)
Anyway, might make a cross platform 3D engine for my sins as an honours project, possible an indoor renderer based on the Quake 3 BSP level format and MD3 model files, then I can see which one I can optimise to the max :D

Why, when 9800 Pro's are only about £160 now? The less you spend on a graphics card, the more you can save, or spend on more important parts like a flatscreen monitor.
Might still use the PS2, but I would like to have my PC ready just in case it needs to be used :D
