Looking at getting a few new books, and am considering a couple of Tom Clancy novels. Any recommendations? Cheers.

I've got one I will sell you cheaply if you want it. I'm not a Clancy fan and got it as a gift.

Any of the Jack Ryan books are worth a read; the earlier ones are better, the latter ones are little more than Clancy fantasising about being President. Rainbow 6 is well written but requires a MAJOR suspension of disbelief about the identity of the bad guys. Avoid the Netforce ones like the plague...

Some of his stuff is a good read, most of it is generic boring-ness.

His patriotic undertones annoy me a lot, and with a lot of these American action writers, he uses all that detail etc..I don't know why, but I wish they'd stop it sometimes. Some books are great, others not. 'Red Storm Rising' for example, is good in parts and utterly terrible in others.

Jack Higgins is another - the same formula (i.e, little wiry clever/strong SAS man asks for a 'Bushmills if y'don't mind' every OTHER PAGE!). Clive Cussler is another, but his use of ancient myths and James Bond style baddies is more interesting.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Bear And The Dragon. But it is not a short read.

probably seeing the film did slightly ruin it cause frankly you hav no idea what's gonna happen in most of Tom Clancy books. but yeh red october did drag on a bit. clear and present is quite long but a lot happens in it and it's all pretty cool.

I read The Hunt For Red October around Christmas. It was alright, I'd seen the film so I knew the plot, obviously the book was a lot more detailed. Did tend to drag on a bit - they knew what to do but they just seemed to keep talking about it. Plus, there were far too many characters, there were at least three or four characters called "Admiral" Admiral this and Admiral that - didn't have a clue who was who.

I'm sure when I eventually read it again it'll make more sense.
