Are the Akasa XP CPU coolers worth their salt?

Just asking as I'm currently wondering whether to go XP2800+ Retail or OEM and buy a fan and heatsink combo from Akasa, as the price is pretty damn close.

I'm buying a 2800 by the way as I can't afford the extra £25 for the XP3000+, as I need to save for the RAM and HD.

According to several people over on Big Forums they've achieved higher clocks in a sensible environment with their DLT3Cs. You can be sure they benchmarked them as well heh.

Also, as I don't want to pay too much for a fan in the future, as some of you have been saying coolermaster, would a Coolermaster Aero 7+ do the job well (It's the one with the attached 3.5" drive bay fan controller)?

Asking as it's only £20 exc delivery.

LOL... I did wonder about going for a slightly cheaper 2500+ but, despite having done this before, I have really REALLY bad luck in RL. Because of this I'm not going to risk it and overclock at the moment and just buy a 2800+, besides... If I overclock later, hopefully I'll be able to reach higher clock speeds on it! (and I'll only spend about an extra £15 anyway... it gives me a bit more more security)

Seriously, forget any Akasa fan. Get this H&F:

It ran my Palomino at <40oC and is running my 2800+ @ 2300mhz at 36oC.

There have been five 1700 DLT3Cs, most if not all week 0311s, to hit 4 GHz or higher. But they all took at least 2.25 volts and water cooling or peltiers or in the case of the Tom's Hardware Guide one, liquid nitrogen. But on the whole, the Mobiles overclock better.

In real world performance the extra cache is equivalent to around 100 MHz of extra clocks. Whether or not they suffer from the T-breds Sudden Inexplicable Death Syndrome remains to be seen.

Although I just had another look and the prices of mobiles have come down. They were at around £80 when I looked a couple of weeks ago. So I am tempted now, but I bought a rather nice little Duron 1.6 GHz to mod. After re-enabling the cache and upping the voltage considerably, 2.4+ GHz for only £21 is a bargain.

But yeah, they are better value now than they were, and they are cheaper than the 2800XP by around £10.

Oh and as for experienced overclocking, it's not even remotely taxing to bump up the multiplier a few notches. I'm not talking 300mhz FSB, 1/1/1/1 RAM timings and double figure voltages here!

I dunno, I've heard reports that the DLT3C JIUHB variations have beaten the Barton modiles.

And those mobiles are only £60, my JIUHB 1700+ was £50!

He was trying to save money remember, Barton Mobiles are more expensive still.

Oh and they really do outperform the JIUHBs, and the even better AIUHBs. Some of the Mobiles have done more than 3 GHz stable. And they have 512 Kb of L 2 Cache. But unless you are an experienced overclocker, and know what you are doing, and have the RAM and cooling to go with it all, then just stick to the cheap option.

No, get a Barton MOBILE chip, from cpucity, overclockers, or most reputable hardware stores. These mobile chips are the cream of the crop and overclock a damn sight better than most chips. Only the old JIUHBs really beat these babies - and they were thoroughbreds.
