We have probably all heard about the impressive bandwidth of ADSL. We may have even heard about the fact that this bandwidth is shared between everyine connected to a particular node. Since this can be upto 50 people, the eventual speed is no better than a 56K modem. However at around £40 a month for a permanent connection, for someone like me, who spends far too much time on the internet, this isn't too bad. What many might not know is that you cannot set-up a server through ADSL. BT won't let you for some reason, probably so they don't get held liable for anything that goes up on a website through and ADSL server. This is a real shame, since many people (myself included) would like to host their own site on their own server at relatively low cost. It seems that BT's service is rather poor. I know someone who has had it installed, but couldn't use it because BT were not ready at their end! Then why bother installing it? And even BT employees don't get any discount (well there goes the only perk on the job). Still it's one of the few broadband connection options for the UK and is better than a kick in the teeth.
