Thought I'd set up a little Service Pack 2 troubles thread, so that we can all place our problems in one place, and hopefully enable people to find a solution quicker.

Problem 1 + solution

I downloaded and installed service pack 2 yesterday; all went well until it had all been installed. Now the system hangs when I start-up (no icons are clickable and hovering the mouse over the task bar shows the egg timer), and on some occasions the screen will be covered in colourful dots.

The problem seems to be with a file called 'drwtsn32.exe', which can be found in the 'Processes' panel when you hit Ctrl, Alt & Delete. Ending this process seems to get rid of the hick-up and enable to computer to run as normal. Clicking on 'Start' then 'Run' and entering 'drwtsn32' enables the program to start running again without any problems.

Problem 2 + solution

The new Windows security centre reports that my virus protection and firewall are not enabled. It states that Norton reports that it is installed but its status is unknown. I have both the Firewall and Antivirus turned on and working, but the Security Centre fails to acknowledge this.

Nah, something more specific. A lot of stuff gets lost in a general specs page like that. Ta for trying though. I'll ask some geeks from other forums, I'm sure they'll know.

Plain english: http://www.neilturner.me.uk/2004/Mar/21/xp_service_pack_2_review.html

Personally, having run SP2 now for 2 weeks on XPPro using the 266Mb version, with no issues (my PC has been on for 11 days now solid with no problems), I'd strongly reccomend it. The focus of the update is security which at the end of the day, is important to fix.

There have been issues with certain apps failign to work, most of which are MS based, but these are due to flaws in the applications security integration with XP.

Microsoft have tried to address all the flaws with XP, and considering they we're never meant to be producing a second service pack, they've done quite well.

I agree, i am overly impressed with SP2. Especially the firewall because of it being made by Microsoft it works well with my LAN and does not give me the B******t Norton or Zonealarm used to give me.

So it really is just the firewall and the patching of mmeory overflow issues? Surely there must be more to that 250MB SP.

Just to add a different perspective to SP2 -
I have a client who attempted to apply SP2 and it left his machine dead!
After many hours of investigation this was found to be due to a history of problems with previous Windows Updates (KB826939 & KB811493).
Following the MS instructions for recovering a dead PC from SP2 was only partially successful and the PC was only usable after performing a Windows Repair Install. Even after doing this most of the Network funtionality was still broken - this was resolved by reinstalling SP1, not always easy without any Internet access!

So yes, for many SP2 has no issues but beware for some it does!
Remember always take good backups then you won't get caught out...

in the control panel theres an extra button 'security centre' which provides you with a firewall, anti-vuris and automatic updates (auto update was already avalible.

also where i turned the windows firewall off, a little red button on my notification area.

its good if you haven't got protection, otherwise, like me i haven't seen much improvement.

although windows fail to tell us how good there firewall and anti-vuris is.

I'm just wondering if windows will completly eliminate outside firewalls and anti-vurises running on xp. After giving them away FREE.
if so is this an evil ploy to be able to charge more for there operating systems and to stop other operating systems getting a large chunk of the market?
