Recently I have been thinking that my everything I am learning now at University will be a complete waste of time because I keep looking at the amount of things that could alter the future of our lives. The world of 2004 is not a happy place, since the Second World War it has been growing and prospering or the Developed World has. Despite the occasional hiccup in Britain with Margaret Thatcher etc the majority of us have a very good middle class lifestyle. But is this all going to change?

How many times have you turned on the television and seen a news broadcast or documentry warning us about the 'future'. Just think of the number of negative things that keep being mentioned:

Off the top of my head I can think of:

Fuel shortages.
Global Warming.
Terrorism and the constant need for the West to inforce democracy on people.
A growing population around the world and the lack of food/water which could lead to many things.
More unstable countries and hostilities.
An aging population and lower birthrate in UK.
Are we going to be able to buy a house? Or stay with parents forever.
An increasing gap between the rich/poor.
The constant decrease in performance of public services.
A population of lazy individuals who are turning obese .
A youth growing up with a single parents, abuse, poverty and drugs/alcohol/crime.
An increase in the right movement in UK and increased racist attacks
Governments seem to be suggesting that people work for them and not the other way around.

Some of those things may look like weak cases but any increase in one can criple our country. Think of how your work/home requires power to operate, without it and things stop - who remembers the furl shortages a fewe years back? In a few days things in the country looked to be stopped dead.

The other night I watched two programmes about how 'another Chernobyl' is almost inevitable, another super volcanic eruption is due and could kill billiob people by blocking out sun for years.

Sorry, I'm paranoid about things but lets just say things have changed a damn sight worse for the better since my parents generation.

Pretty much every generation has been able to make a list of doom and gloom

*looks at Sheepy's list*

*Fuel shortages.

No Problem, oil is going to last to about 2020 and cold fusion is so close now. We can also fall back to Nuclear, and we have several renewable sources we can use. Sure, not everywhere in the world has all these options but this country does and as far as day to day life goes that is all that matters.

*Global Warming.

Again, a problem for other places but we're actually looking like all we'll get is a more mediterranean climate. Bonus, non?

*Terrorism and the constant need for the West to inforce democracy on people.

When was the last time we actually were attacked here in the UK, apart from the odd bit of Irish stuff in the late 90's? We've never been so secure actually. As far as enforcing democracy - well we're not really enforcing it - we're spreading it, and it's actually leading to a better world in the end. After all if dictators are so popular they'll be able to run as a candidate in democratic elections won't they? Oops no they'll not stand a chance... the greatest threat to democracy and it's spread are those who know that under it they will have no power. Like the loyalists in Iraq.

*A growing population around the world and the lack of food/water which could lead to many things.

Again, in terms of us in the UK it's not a major problem - we can secure water and we have the science, if needs be, to artifically grow most of what we need. We also have strong allies. Where things are going to get potentially desperate are in developing nations whose governments authority is already tenuos.

*More unstable countries and hostilities.

Again, the actual impact on us here in the UK is minimal - we have the force and allies to tackle most threats and contain regional violence.

*An aging population and lower birthrate in UK.

It's a financial problem, but other countries have coped and there is nothing to say it will not rise again.

*Are we going to be able to buy a house? Or stay with parents forever.

Temporary, the housing market goes in boom/bust runs and a lot depends on getting the qualifications to get a decentish starting job.

*An increasing gap between the rich/poor.

A problem yep, but not exactly armageddon...

*The constant decrease in performance of public services.

Not that bad, and it can be corrected....just vote out Labour for starters.

*A population of lazy individuals who are turning obese .

Everyone? Nope, still only a section of the population, just like those who drink in excess or smoke regularly - the difference being that the medical impact of the latter two cannot be corrected where as obesity can by simple weight loss and medication.

A youth growing up with a single parents, abuse, poverty and drugs/alcohol/crime.

*Well it's not everyone is it? Nor is having a single parent necessarily worse than having two.

*An increase in the right movement in UK and increased racist attacks
Governments seem to be suggesting that people work for them and not the other way around.

Well it is the left movement which has brought us to this point....if you go back over your points then more can be attributed to left wing policies and ideas than the right.

And I'd say there is a greater awareness of racism and not necessarily racist attacks.

He's coming and so is the false prophet, who might well be the Pope.
