I just had a look at Top of the Pops web-site to see how Knives Out done... as I don't listen to top 40 on Radio as 87% is cack and well I was drinking lots of water last night. I wasn't expecting a number 1 from it but at least a top 10 if not top 5. Pyramid Song got number 5 even know I prefer Knives Out to it. I think it got number 5 as they had not released a single in ages and was first from album so fans got it for glimpse of new album and B-sides etc.
Anyway it got NUMBER 13 (unlucky for some). Ok, many of you may not like Radiohead and say that it too good for it. This is not about Radiohead, it is about giving credit too where credit is due.
Number 1 this week is song I don't know so I cannot comment on it but I can guess it is some crappy pop number. Second which is last weeks number 1 is Atomic Kitten (were going to be called Nuclear P***y). Cover of somebody elses and probablt took 5 mins to do and then it gets number 1 because all these silly people buy it :D. The number 3... Jenifer Lopez... a song pretending she speaks Spanish. The list goes on.
It really, really annoys me how this crap gets number 1's... so maybe even if pop was taken out Radiohead would still never get number 1 as they are ahead of their time for some peope, and too complicated.
What I like is.... you should only really judge a band I feel to see where their album got to. Most of these pop idots don't have albums as they can only do a few covers and maybe one song somebody else wrote.
Radiohead many number 1 albums worldwide so they rock :D. In saying that a band can also be brilliant but albums don't go brilliant, say their first release etc.
Hmmmm
What I am trying to say is... don't judge a band on how good their song does in charts and at the end of the day who is going to be remembered more Atomic Kitten or Radiohead?
And in saying that I am never going to look at top 40 list agains as it fills me with rage.
Just an extra little note I forgot to add up there ^.
Songs like Fake Plastic Trees... which is excellent got number 20... I could go on forever using many bands and songs and positions but at the end of the day...
POP is talentless and moronic... if you like it fine, your choice. Just don't say they are talented or deserved it or look up too them in any way :D
A thank you

It's sales, not how good the music is
You say that the chart position doesn't reflect how good a song is, that it only reflects sales. Surely, the more sales there are shows that more people think the song is good, therefore more people think that the teletubbies are better than Radiohead, or whatever.
I used to like listening to the charts about 5 years ago, there was some good stuff in there and it reflected my choice in music. Also, songs moved UP as well as down in the charts. It was quite possible for a track to float about the number 5 position for a couple of weeks before climbing to number 1.
Now it seems the opposite. Songs hardly ever climb. Whtaever position they debut at is normally their highest position, they then just fall down the charts over the following weeks.
But the charts still represent what the mass market likes music wise. People won't go out and buy a song they don't like. I personally hated Bob the Builder, but enough people obviously liked it to get it to christmas number 1.
The charts reflect how commercialised our society has become. Songs do well in the charts becuse they were heard on an advert, Bran Van 3000 anyone? It only just scraped the top 40 first time around, then it got put on that beer advert, was re-released and got top 5.
Bob the Builder is the same. Everything these days has to have a tie in.
Whether you like it or not, the top 40 does represent society, it's just some people don't like what it shows....
> Goatboy, I think you contradict yourself there.

Maybe, but seeing as Baywatch is the most watched programme on this planet, "more people" scares me.
Just because a lot of people buy a song, doesn't mean it's a good song, just means a lot of people have really, really poor judgement and taste.
And I'm not generalising, someone needs to stand up and say "I'm sorry but you're wrong and...to be honest..pretty thick" when it comes to most of the people out there.
A person is clever, people are stupid.
See Brasseye, GM Food panic, Fuel Shortage, Global warming etc - something scary happens when people get together, they become a teeming mass with little or no cogitant ability.
And The Teletubbies etc are bad songs, can't deny it.
In saying that after Amnesiac got too number 1 in album chart it fell faster than something that falls faster :D
I hate also how a song and video are played 3 weeks before it is released. EVERYONE is responsible for this.. although it is nice to hear the song and video soon but then when it is released its so what? I've heard that.
Just because a lot of people buy a song, doesn't mean
> it's a good song, just means a lot of people have really, really

Yes, but they think it's good, and to them, thats all that matters. The charts reflect the mass markets opinion of the current music.
When a Teletubbies or Bob The Builder single gets released, virtually every parent in the UK who's child likes the programme will buy the single, thus elevating it to number 1.
You can never judge the quality of the song on it's chart position - after all, Glen Mediros got to the top, didn't he!?
Top of the pops a few weeks ago featured OPM-Heaven is a half-pipe, what a spade load of utter manure. This was then followed by the dubious talents of one lyrically challenged leper with Fire-Wire.
Need we say more?
