The SEGA-Nintendo relationship is falling.

With no new exclusive software due for the system and the merger with Sammy damaging the relationship further it looks like SEGA are to wave farewell. Granted the fan base for Phantasy Star and Monkey Ball will always mean they'll appear on Nintendo systems, but it looks increasingly likely that these games will be appearing on rival formats too. PSO Universe is almost certainly going to appear on one rival format, Sonic deserted Nintendo's system earlier this year and Super Monkey Ball: Deluxe (which could be SMB and SMB2 combined) is set for the PS2.

Of course previous exclusive title Virtual Fighter Quest also got a PS2 version.

This is a disaster, Nintendo's friends in SEGA such as Sonic Team and Amusement Vision maybe forced to make their games multi-format and cancel their previous exclusive support for the Gamecube.

But there is something else. Nintendo and Bandai.

Are we on the verge of a new Japanese super power????

Whether it is a merger or a complete Nintendo buyout is unsure but Nintendo have been progressivly becoming bigger and bigger owners of the Dragon Ball z and Digimon company. Some of the biggest worldwide franchises. Nintendo currently own a 2.3% share of the company making them the ninth largest investor and they appear to be the only one who are interested in adding to their holdings.

Nintendo's Pokemon, Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong franchises are known worlwide and the national and global appeal of cult hits such as Dragonball Z is interesting Nintendo. Bandai are essentially a more cartoon based enterprise who develop unique gadgets and in particular video games. Much like SEGA and Sammy, these two Japanese giants are getting closer every year.

We all talk about the possibility of Namco, Microsoft, Capcom and SEGA mergers but if we are being totally realistic here... it is Bandai and Nintendo who are most likely of jumping in bed together.

Is the future bright?

I'm seeing it from a strictly finacial point of view, Nintendo and Bandai won't make Nintendo this weak seeming company (although they are far from it) but instead a Japanese super power....

Although they will get a full blown toy maker representation.

I liked Soccer Slam, but other than that Sega haven't really impressed me with their Cube offerings.

In the meantime, I'd like to see Nintendo make an ultimate Dragon Ball Z game. You might hate the series, but between the cheezy dialogue and 10 minute "powering up by yelling in a consipated stance as the world collapses around you", the fights are pretty decent and definately the inspiration for that last Neo VS Smith fight in Matrix Revolutions.

A decent free-flying fight system would be great.

SEGA don't release their 2k series sports games on the cube anyway, so it's no great shakes, as that is what they're best at, and we never had it. The only other thing that I would miss would be Shenmue 3 but that's disappeared into the recesses of Yu Suzukis subconcious.

And I doubt that there would ever have been a Skies sequel.

I never said they were... I'm just saying we are not going to get anything exclusive.

No loss of 'Monkey Ball Deluxe' if it is a combinatoin of 1&2. The loss of 3 would be mightily annoying. VF RPG - I'm surprised it wasn't on PS2 anyway. Shame, but it seems SEGA are not completely abandoning the Cube, if VF RPG is still coming too it.

Bandai are one of the biggest toy/cartoon/games companies in the world...

I was planning on making two posts about the two issues, the bad issue of SEGA and the promising issue of Bandai....

I wasn't trying to sugercoat one over the other.
