The SEGA-Nintendo relationship is falling.

With no new exclusive software due for the system and the merger with Sammy damaging the relationship further it looks like SEGA are to wave farewell. Granted the fan base for Phantasy Star and Monkey Ball will always mean they'll appear on Nintendo systems, but it looks increasingly likely that these games will be appearing on rival formats too. PSO Universe is almost certainly going to appear on one rival format, Sonic deserted Nintendo's system earlier this year and Super Monkey Ball: Deluxe (which could be SMB and SMB2 combined) is set for the PS2.

Of course previous exclusive title Virtual Fighter Quest also got a PS2 version.

This is a disaster, Nintendo's friends in SEGA such as Sonic Team and Amusement Vision maybe forced to make their games multi-format and cancel their previous exclusive support for the Gamecube.

But there is something else. Nintendo and Bandai.

Are we on the verge of a new Japanese super power????

Whether it is a merger or a complete Nintendo buyout is unsure but Nintendo have been progressivly becoming bigger and bigger owners of the Dragon Ball z and Digimon company. Some of the biggest worldwide franchises. Nintendo currently own a 2.3% share of the company making them the ninth largest investor and they appear to be the only one who are interested in adding to their holdings.

Nintendo's Pokemon, Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong franchises are known worlwide and the national and global appeal of cult hits such as Dragonball Z is interesting Nintendo. Bandai are essentially a more cartoon based enterprise who develop unique gadgets and in particular video games. Much like SEGA and Sammy, these two Japanese giants are getting closer every year.

We all talk about the possibility of Namco, Microsoft, Capcom and SEGA mergers but if we are being totally realistic here... it is Bandai and Nintendo who are most likely of jumping in bed together.

Is the future bright?

Yea I see where you're coming from here, I remember posting something very similar a long time ago. If Nintendo can get a growing fanbase from the next generation of gamers, then they should remain a strong force in the market.

Even the GBA version of Monkey Ball was good and that was even with the bad digital control system. Portable Monkey Golf is fantastic.

The thing is that Nintendo seem to make it, then fall back on their laurels and lose it all again.

Oh but they are. Isn't the reason Nintendo introduced and marketed the SP aggresively as an adult piece of kit that they wanted to attract more style-conscious adult gamers?

The thing is with the adult market is that they are not teens. They are not phased about what is cool.

I know an adult would go I'm looking for a games console and PS2 is the first thing they hear. But they do not discard Nintendo... as long as their are adult games on the system then there will be adult gamers.

It's no use just saying the "adult" (ie. teens and up) gamers will "come around". They more Nintendo establish their kiddie image, the more they will be put off.

If Nintendo can firmly hook the children market then tphi then Nintendo have nothing to worry about.

Yes Nintendo are lumbured with the "kiddie console" image but Sony is also lumbured with the "adult console" image. The adult market has more money and therefore so does Sony BUT Nintendo can survive quite nicely if they monopolise the children end of the market.

And they don't. They are forced to share it with mainly Sony and therefore Nintendo don't really have a market to call their own.

The adult gamers will come round, they will be attracted by the Metroid Prime's and the occasional adult release of titles such as Zelda....

But Nintendo need to cement themselves in a market... and I think you'll find Sony are more willing to give up their young person demographic than their adult.

And besides we loved Nintendo when we were kids... as kids get older they either go with Sony or join Nintendo's hardcore fanbase.

Nintendo and Bandai merging is exactly what Nintendo needs in the West to cement their kiddie image. Ask someone in the UK what Bandai means to them. Power Rangers? Action Figures?

Hardcore.
