How can you say that when Ocarina of Time, considered by a large number of gamers to be one of if not the best game ever, was in 3D? Then there's Mario 64, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, etc.
That doesn't mean that 2D games are unacceptable though. I still love Super Mario World as do many other people and Nintendo consoles have been home to some great 2D titles but they have also allowed us to play some excellent 3D games (as mentioned above) which have been loved just as much as the classic 2D games by 'Ninty fanboys'.
That's like saying "If Nintendo are so revolutionary, why didn't they invent things sooner?"
