What do you think of my website? http://www.oldbishopsgate.tk You'll probably think it's really bad, but it is the first site I've ever done.

Well said, that man.

I find a good way to get ideas (because I am crap is simply to browse other sites and look at how they've laid things out - don't just rip off their design, but try out similar ideas.

Like Tyla said: doing HTML by hand is a lot easier than you may think and it'll help you in the long run. When you're looking for ideas on other sites, have a look at the code (View -> Source) - some sites will probably be confusing and look a mess, but some will have comments next to stuff helping you to see how they've done what they've done.

And don't take the derogatory comments to heart - some of the people on here are heartless!

He's just started out. Not even I would drop CSS onto a n00b without the knowledge that they understand the subtlties of HTML first.

Best place to start would be HTML 4.01 where you can still use stylistic elements in your HTML and still validate. Then move onto xHTML 1.0 Transitional. Then xHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, HAND CODE!!! It'll make learning stuff a lot easier.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Even my first site was bad, and I'm that old, I was confined to HTML2 and CSS hadn't even been heard of!

For a first stab, it's alright. There's content, and a purpose other than "look what I tried to make".

A couple of suggestions:

1. The colours. Too may going on here. Try to simplify you options by restricting your pallet to say 2 or 3 colours to begin with. This kind of restriction makes you think more about what's going on.

2. Screen size. Try not to design a site based on your monitor dimensions. You may be at 1600x1200 but the rest of the world isn't.

One of the hardest things about making a site is the uncertainty of the end users set up. Workk from 800x600 upwards to ensure all should see the site how you want them too.

3. LEARN TO HAND CODE

Other's but not so important:

1. Framesets are a HUGE no no. Learn this now and never be ridiculed about it again.

2. Ditch the nasty, nasty, Java applet navigation. It hurts and basically it sucks.

Like I said, we all have to start somewhere, it's just keeping the momentum gping to want to better yourself and learn.
