Is now available!!!! I've heard about a pirate version being circulated around. Ages before its release. And unlike the pirate version of Halflife 2, it apparently works quite well.

I'll post a review if I get my grubby mits on a copy.

If there was indeed playable code available, it would be a textureless, eventless landscape with wireframe buildings and characters, and no AI.

Enjoy.

As it got buried in the midst of a rant, can I just point out my most overwhelmingly strong point...

I would say they've been busy working on a sequel as well (well, more of that later) - but playable code doesn't result until they're well into the process. More importantly, optomisation to make it run on standard software won't occur until very late in the process. It's not a case of it'll look a bit rough, it's a case of it won't run in Windows and that there is no collective whole to be stolen/leaked/whatever.

Look at the surrounding facts. There's been no news of this leak - if true, it would be as big as Half-Life 2 leaking. Secondly, after Half-Life 2 leaking, every developer will have locked down security, an unlikely event even more unlikely. Thirdly, the internet is full of fake "leaks" that fools are taken in by. Fourthy, Rockstar have been busy since Vice City was launched on the PS2 - see PC version and XBox conversions, plus I'm assuming they have other franchises. It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect there simply to be tech demos and conceptual designs for levels at this point. Making a game in as much planning as coding... which brings me back to their being no playable code until rather late in the process. Why do you think games that are just a few months away from release end up in video form at ECTS/E3/etc? This is a process that Rockstar have said will take until late 2004 for a PS2 version. Then, by previous titles, a good 6 to 8 months more for a PC version. So a PC verion leaking now? No way.

There is no significant playable code of the next GTA game available now. Guaranteed.

Right. But if this 'San Andreas' or whatever it's called blows, I can safely say I will be a mug.

Probably, but you never know: It might actually be quite good.

I don't know if this game will work, or if it won't. All I've heard is that it's quite good. But when I get it, I'll be able to answer a few questions.

I suppose it's like a concept car- A way to try out new concepts and implement them into something pre-production, like a Mercedes 'Vision'- something that's gonna be made, but isn't yet polished and finished off.

Do you really seriously believe there's no playable code for the next GTA (assuming one will exist) yet? What have the developers been doing since Vice City came out?

I really doubt they haven't started work on a sequel.

Chances are that the code's still primitive and I don't really think it's been leaked, but to say that no playable code's been created yet is a pretty bold statement considering you don't actually work for Rockstar (of course you could, but I doubt that muchly), and so have absolutely no idea as to the current happenings regarding the next GTA.

First thing I knew about GTA3 PC being close to release was a preview in PCGamer about a month before it was released. There were rumours before that, yes, but no real information was given out until very close to its release.
Vice City really came out of nowhere also.

Think about this just for a second. Please.

San Andreas hasn't even been confirmed as a name, but lets just call it that for simplicity. It's at least a year away from release on the PS2, and as it's taken them about a further 8-10 months to get the PC versions out, well say 20 months away from the PC. If there was playable code now, what state do you think it would be in 20 months before release?

Clue: IT WON'T EXIST.

Someone mentioned Half-Life 2/Halo leaks - these were a few months before projected release dates, we're talking about a game at least a year behind where those were when they were leaked.

Also, if something playable exists (which it doesn't), we'd be seeing far more screenshots and in game footage about. Think about the number of Half-Life 2 videos you saw before it leaked.
