You need to have a Hard Drive in your 360 however, but it IS backwards compatible.

Only problem with that is they've removed brach predictions from the pipeline and the PPC cores only do in-order execution, not out of order so raw performance for emulation will spend a lot of time doing those, and building an emulator wouldn't be easy.

Since the graphics are done in Direct X, moving from nVidia to ATI shouldn't be an issue. The only issue will be the X86 to PPC architecture. I actually think they have enough power to do on the fly software emulation. Three 3.2 GHz physical cores, all of which support simultaneous multithreading to emulate a 733 MHz P3/Celeron. A 500 MHz Alpha chip used to be able to emulate a P2 at around 300 MHz using FX!32.

My guess is that the emulation software will be on the harddrive and that they say it will work with the top Xbox games is because they probably can't get them all tested in time. There will also likely be a degree of PPC code generation so that all subsequent plays of Halo run at least some of the code natively.

Or a microwave in a toaster.

Why don't microsoft just stick the 360 in an Xbox, and then call it the Xbox 360.

...oh wait.

Much like sticking toaster components into a microwave then?

My comparison rocks!

Rubbish.

The PSOne used a MIPS3000 processor, the PS2 used a MIPS5000 series processor.

The PS2 HAS a MIPS3000 series processor in it to run PSone games.

It acts as an IO controller for processing input etc. when the PS2 games are using the main processor.
