It has just been announced (by Robert Llewellyn at a convention) that the BBC have commissioned a 60 minute Red Dwarf episode to be filmed in October 08 with original cast and writers.

Now I know many think the series lost it's way in series 7 and 8, but the episodes of 8 that had the budget were actually very good, so a one off special sounds like it could work.

Anyway, the Official Red Dwarf site hasn't posted the news yet, but it does sound pretty definite.

Update:
3 episodes from 10-12th April.
Making of and outtakes/best of by Patrick Stewart.

Robert is having his head cast this Thursday for the Krytrn mask. Everything is going to plan, should be on Dave in Easter and then launched globally on DVD and I think has been sold to 29 countries so they can watch it too. That's pretty good I didnt think it would be that popular still.

I've got the anniversary box set now with all the episodes so far from all 8 series. It's huge.

Looking forward to the episodes on Dave next year.

BBC Source

Looks like we only have to wait until Easter for the new specials. The 'no-holds-barred' episode sounds an different idea, will be interested to see exactly how that pans out.

Yeah, Yahoo has the news on it as well.

The Back To Earth storyline sounds interesting too. Can't wait.

First Image

How old does Chris Barrie look now? Also seems like he is back to being a hologram, be interesting to see how they work that one.

There is another image knocking about with the 4 of them standing outside the pub from Coronation Street but can't find a decent copy of it so far.

Don't know how they'll explain the aging, but all the crew transported themselves to a parallel universe in the final episode of season VIII except for Rimmer, who kicked Death where it hurts and legged it, so technically Rimmer is dead...again. (except he was Captain Rimmer in that universe, and almost everything worked out right for him...and he didn't run into his parallel self...

VIII was a bit of a confusing mess at times.

I'm going to have to watch them all through again before this one is on, aren't I?!

It's finished filming, so I guess it's all going to be post-production stuff now.

Pretty much going to be set on Earth after the ship is almost destroyed by the crew's own ineptitude and laziness. Should be an interesting show anyway. Sophie Winkelman is playing Rimmer's hologram replacement sent to annoy him.

Back To Earth is now a 3 part story (no unplugged special, it's been postponed) being shown on 10th April on Dave.

The DVD release is scheduled for 15th June.

Wonder whats gonna happen with Earth? Seen as its a very very long way in the future. Unless they have gone back in time.

I know they did in the books by staying on the reverse planet until Lister was young again, but how they will explain it is gonna be fun.

It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere.
