I think that the PS2 is potentially a great console in the making, but it defniately does have its flaws. Programming is not one of them, I think programmers are getting lazy with super powerful development tools at their disposal- we have to remember that it took over 5 years for the developers to get the bast out of the original Playstation.
We have also seen in America and Japan that there is enormous demand for the new machine, on both launch days their stocks sold out within a matter of hours. Also, admittedly, the launch line up for the Japanese launch was poor at best, but for some reason the Japanese always seem to get sub-standard merchandise at the cost of being first to get it. Id rather wait for a better quality one personally.
That is what well get on November the 24th- the launch line up is considerably stronger than in Japan and if PAL conversions are good, they will be some excellent games coming out- TTT, RR 5 and SSX Snowboarding are three prime examples, but I am sure that there are many others you can name.
The critics have been out for Sonys head ever since the botched up launch in Japan, but everyone makes mistakes! The reason why it was more obvious this time than for the Playstation was that was Sony were a relative unknown at the time, and nobody really cared if they botched up their launch, everyones eyes was on the Sega Saturn. Also they had a lot more time to prepare for it, unlike with the PS2 launch. That is probably the reason why there are hardware shortages.
All in all, I think that you have to give a new console time to settle in before you see what it is truenly capable of, and with some excellent games coming out next year, it will definately have a strong consumer base behind it to compete with the big two- Nintendo and Microsoft, which in the latter will find it very difficult at first. Its not all about huge amounts of money piled in to make it work.
Overall, when the PS2 is launched next month, you have to realise that most people it will be the first chance to play the PS2, so alot of people at the moment are closed minded and attack what they dont understand or havent played yet, espically the press. What I believe is that the PS2 has and will be successful, and well see it develop into a great console. I also believe that NGC and X-Box will do well as well, it will be interesting at the end of next year which company comes out on top.
And that's play games! The DC releases look really good alongside Nintendo's ones, anyone who doesn't agree should be shot! With the PS2 coming i see no change to the gaming market, N64 games will come out, DC games will come out, still neither of them will be affected by the release of the PS2 as people thought it would.
No the N64 won't die, people will continue playing it after the games dry up, it is still a world class console, the DC will live on to make even better games, and people will buy that because of a cheap price, because it doesn't want to make the console overloaded so the console will be overpriced. The N64 and DC are the perfect gamers choice, so is the PS1, it's games were quality and the console is one of the cheapest in the industry, and people will still be playing it.
The PS2 promises to be just as big as the Playstation. There were, and still are, lots of good games on the Playstation to choose from and because there are so many games altogether, you are bound to get lots of bad games as well. The PS2 looks to be no different to this. There will be the outstanding games that sell the console and encourage more people to buy it once they've had a go, then there are the games which are mediocre, but create enough hype for people to want them anyway (usually film licences or cult favorites) and then there are the awful games, which every console has anyway.
Some people want the PS2 to suffer because they see Sony as hostile towards the games industry, trying to monopolise the market and grab the cash, but they are merely competing with the other players, and I hope they do well. This does not mean I hope the others don't, but what would the world be like without the freedom to choose? Not to mention the fact that competition pushes the technology further, without it there would be little need for new and amazing consoles every 3-5 years.
I'm also betting that I'll wish I never wrote this in a few day's time!
I don't even want to get it at all, because i always know Nintendo are the best when it comes to games, has Sony ever made a game themselves, that has set the platforming world together to improve itself, third party companies are needed to get the games through before the new year.
There's bound to be bugs in them, if making games is hard on the PS2, and Sony make them rush out a games for launch before Christmas that isn't a games console if they aren't bothered to contribute in the launch. Greedy but there's no chance to change their minds if they want it or not, it's up to them whether they want a GC or X-Box or a PS2. I would really like a GameCube because of Nintendo's super games and because of Rare.
As I said, the Gamecube is faster than the PS2.
