I think that now this question has to be asked about nu-metal:
'Is it really nu-metal or should it be re-named 'pop-metal' due to it's chart success???'

I think that 'yes' could be the answer, and all you have to do is look around to see why!

Look at the results for the pop charts over the last couple of months. We've seen nu-metal bands of the likes of Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Staind and now Puddle of Mudd riding high in the top 20, when many of us know they really shouldn't be there!

All rock bands (including metal) start out as a small group of about 5 guys who decide they want to form a new band. They start playing and practicing together, producing their own work, and some may eventually become good enough to earn gigs and pubs and nights-out, and maybe then get signed up by a record label, some as big as Interscope.
They have worked their way up from the bottom and nearer to the top, where they become doomed to fail.

Pop/dance groups on the other hand (not bands!) are made up simply of random people who meet after becoming the 6/7 finalists in a televised contest like Pop Idol. They don't know each other, they've never met before, and they're thrown together to try and make something work between them. But how can they when they don't even know ONE of another memebers' interests???
So, they are given a manager to take control and rake in the stacks full of cash due to their 'un-earned' success. They don't even write their own songs, or create their own dance routines!! So how on Earth can they be making music when all they do is move around, mime, and earn their manager loads of money???

As you can see, pop and rock are 2 completely different genres of music. One is for the hard-working friends who do everything for and by themselves, while the other is a for the lazy people who want to cry out "ME MEE MEEE!!!!" infront of thousands of people, while doing all their 'hard-work' *COUGH* for anyone but themselves.

I'm not trying to say that these 2 genres are similar to each other, but nu-metal is music that is invading a place where it does not belong - in a world for little kids and girls where nothing is real, all immitations!
But for some reason, all these fans of pop and dance music have taken a liking to bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, and I can honestly not see how or why they're interested in this style of music!!???
To me, it's a problem. And it means that not everything in the music world is right. Something needs to be done!
Maybe Linkin Park should swear - but then listeners might think they're cool because of these explicit lyrics.
Maybe they should be 'heavier' like true metal - that'd probably work, as it'd be too loud for their ears that are used to listening to happy songs about flowers and animals!

If we have too many of our metal idols falling into this trap then they'll be finnished before you can say "NOOOOOOO!!!!"
Bands like Limp Bizkit have already been affected, look at the huge slip in quality when comparing their first album '3 Dollar Bill, Yall£' with the latest pair of 'Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water' and 'New Old Songs'. I believed they've lost the plot due to the influence of their new-found pop fans, and this could be part of the reason as to why Wes Borland found it all too much and left the band! Good on ya!

By listening to Linkin Park's debut album 'Hybrid Theory' you can sort of see how and why pop fans have taken a liking to it, with easier listning songs like 'In The End', which has been drained of life due to publicity.
If LP release their next album full of 'Crawling's and 'One Step Closer's, and ignore their new-found fans, they'll be back on track to be one of the greatest rock bands to date!!

But the way things are going, Linkin Park and co. will surely be branded 'pop-metallers'. :S

Yep, that's a common occurence in today's society!
Many people do that now, mainly youngesters. And they can't even tell the difference between Death Metal and Punk!

I think that this is a likely explanation as to why nu-metal has dissapointingly invaded the pop charts, and it does exxplain why I see year 7's and girls going around in Slipknot hoodies shouting "IOWA RUUUUUUULES!!!"

My sister is one such person who likes to pretend to be into bands like Slipknot, by owning their hoodies. It's quite pathetic really because she isn't actually into the bands she just wants to look 'cool' infront of her mates.

Everytime one of her freinds come round she always comes to me or my brother and asks if she can borrow one of our CD's weather its Slipknot or Korn, it doesn't really matter as she only uses them to show off.

It's annoying especially when she she starts to sing along to the latest songs from Pink and No Doubt on the TV. I wouldn't mind as much if she was truly into metal, but she doesn't know anything about it, just flaunting about pretending to be ito it so she will look good infront of her mates.

I agree, and that's a good thing for the future of this music! But within time, unfortunately many of these bands will probably become 'popular' :(

I hate that too!!
But I laugh at Slipknot when I see kids of a similar age wearing Slipknot hoodies, doing that devil's horns sign thing with their hands, and going "Yeah, Iowa rocks!!!" - like the true American's they really are!
But having girls liking In The End is still bad, unless they're into punk and metal. If you ask them to name one song other than 'In The End', they can't!!

Yes, by 'dance music' I did mean the mainstream stuff, all comercialised and eveything, like pop. It is they style of music everyone immediatly think of when they hear 'pop'.
And sorry, I didn't mean to insult you if that's how you feel, and I haven't heard any 'proper dance' stuff so I won't comment on it. - Except for the fact that I probaby still wouldn't like it!

I've heard a couple of his tracks from the past, all fo which I've enjoyed. But I don't think I've heard enough to really get into him.

He's been around for ages though, and got a few albums out. Haven't got any of them myself.

I remember some people chatting about him on here before as well, can't remember who it was though, unfortunately.

Clutch on TOTP would be fantastic!

Most of the audience would just stand there, probably thinking "WTF is this?!".

Alright but I cant hear it till tonight.

Mauro Picotti, I've never heard him, just the name was bandied about here lots.
Then he hits the chart.
I'd be interested to see if the people that like him would suddenly be "Oh he's mainstream and crap now" as seems to happen with so many "cult" bands, once everyone knows them, they lose that kudos with the "I've been into them for ages" type of crowd.
I think genuine fans of any band would love to see their favs hit the charts high.

And I pray for the day Clutch get into TOTP.
That would rule.

"Mauro Picotti is in the chart, so does that mean he's now maintstream and rubbish?"

Did you think he's rubbish before? If so, then you would probably still think he's rubbish.

If you thought he was good before, he's probably still good.

I haven't heard the track myself, so I don't know if he's changed his style or whether he's doing the same old, but finally getting more airplay.

Goaty, if you want some more "proper" dance, download some Saint Germain.

It's a French bloke (don't let that put you off) and it mixes jazz and dance. I quite like it.

If you've got Morpheus still going at work, try and get some tracks like "So Flute" "Land of..." "Deep in it" "Thankyou mum (for everything)".

Give them a listen. You may hate them, but I'm determined to try and get as many people to listen to them as possible.

This is true.
I consider myself an enemy of "dance" music, but that's only the stuff I've heard in the charts.

YH did me a CD of "proper" dance and it's excellent.
Fila Brazilia is top and I bought David Holmes when I was on Jury Duty.

One question:
Mauro Picotti is in the chart, so does that mean he's now maintstream and rubbish?

Lo Pan will kill you all.

Actually, I was with a mate talking about how rubbish relationships can be and then we shot Americans in Flashpoint and then we played MGS2 and smoked loads like blokes and talked of rock.

But I've seen it endless times.
It's all in the reflexes
