An 18 rated game tops the charts, angry parents start complaining, and 'The Daily Mail' get themselves ready for a battle of words. It can mean only one thing. Rockstar are back! This time with 'State Of Emergency', the most controversial and violent game ever.

The game in its self is really just a violence sim. You have to fight your way around four massive sectors in a city called Capitol City. These sectors are The Mall, East Side, Corporation central, and everyone’s fave, Chinatown. All these maps are truly massive with each part detailed to the brim. Everything you would expect is there. The mall is full of shops and shiny tiled floors while China Town is a mass of oriental delights from Chinese arches to fast food take-away shops. The magic of the areas though is the brilliant atmosphere and interactive ness. The areas are populated by up to 200 manic people on screen at once all of whom look different from each other. Due to the panic put on the city by the freedom group you work for, all the citizens run around in a frenzied manner, shouting, screaming, and hurling objects around!

As well as normal citizens though, the areas are populated by other gangs and many SWAT like American Corp troops. These are all armoured with the most brutal weapons around. The problem is though that unfortunately you don't have any weapons. You do however have your trusty fists and feet. An excellent set up of controls means that you can fight your way through the hoards of troops with ease. Flying kicks, right hooks, stomach blows and bone-crunching combos are all on offer to punish your enemies as much as possible. When your enemy hits the floor you now have the choice of taking his weapon aswell as ranking up some valuable points. These are usually truncheons but sometimes you can find the odd delight like the MK47, the M16 assault rifle, and even the nasty pepper spray!

The great thing about this game though is that not only do you have your regular weapons but also you can make your own! Anything you see that is light enough to pick up can be used to throw and swipe at your opponents. Bigger objects do more damage and learning which objects hurt and which don't is key in order to fight off enemies.
Enemies are not the only things that can be destroyed though. Every window, building, and stationary vehicle, can also be smashed, crumpled and blown up. Small weapons like the baseball bat and truncheon only do small damage to the scenery but if you manage to get hold of a rocket launcher or grenade launcher then you can be sure that anything in your way is as good as dead. And that’s the great thing. Rather than windows breaking and signs shattering, big explosions cause all sorts of ruckus from flaming doorways to singed bodies on the floor. But that’s not all. New areas can be unlocked by shooting certain areas. For example the car park in the mall can be accessed by blasting the door that leads you there unlocking a vast array of things.

The main thing that peopled worried about when previewing this game was the lifespan. However, over 50 missions and 5 Kaos modes should put those peoples minds at rest. The main game called 'Revolution' sees you controlling 1 of 2 (more can be unlocked) characters in a quest to get back at the Corp. In a CNN news style, the status of the city is announced on the T.V. In order to make more chaos you have to complete missions for the freedom group. These missions consist of escorting, killing, and delivering. You name it, it's got it.

Kaos mode on the other hand consists of 5 modes. Each is a manic blast around the areas in order to pick up as many points as possible. Points are gained for killing troops (but not civilians), smashing up shops and generally causing havoc!

Overall SOE is a great game. It has fab detailed graphics with brilliant SFX and a lengthy one-player mode. So if you like GTA3 or just feel plain violent then what are you waiting for? Get it now before there is a riot!

Yes.

I only played it for an hour or so and found it to get very repetitive. Loads of action in this game, but no real skill required, just button bashing really.
