My second's in awesome but not in great
My third is in mother but not seen in dad
My fourth is in sunny but never in sad
My fifth is a vowel found in water not creek
My sixth is found only in one day of the week
My seventh's two of three that you learn when you're young
My eighth's not in song but it's there when it's sung
My ninth's in eleven and twelve, not thirteen
My tenth is in island and river, not stream
My eleventh's in precious and secret and paste
My twelfth is in phantom and spectre and haste
My whole stalks the night in a quiet dreamlike state
With no memories the next day of being out late

clever Bubba indeed, or maybe the just didn't dig deep enough.
Pop's potato crop shouldn't be short of nutrients this season :)
Took some thought - At first I thought the fact that Bubba was in Prison was the red herring - i.e. he was actually a prison office or something so he just came home and did it - reading all the replies from you blew that idea away.
Ahh - but they didn't find a corpse - clever old Bubba !!

that's pretty much it,
The old man wrote a letter
to his son and
described his predicament.
Dear Bubba,
I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my potato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me.
Love, Dad
A few days later, he received a letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
For heaven's sake, Dad, don't dig up that garden. That's where I
buried the BODIES.
Love, Bubba
At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local Police showed up
and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day, the old man received another letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Go ahead and plant the potatoes now. It's the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love, Bubba
The prison authorities intercepted the letter and told the local sheriff who went round with his deputies and they dug the garden till they found the corpse ?

Erm, were they police then?

Did the prison service then send 'some people' round?
