The old sonic games you had to complete in a day (in one sitting) because there were no save points.
(I've probably remembered that wrong... Except that nearly no old games had save points, just passwords for the levels).
Sonic 1 definitely had no save points, and no passwords, and so had to be completed in one sitting.
