Second year at University, still the same.
I should probably clarify that I'm not talking about "students that are DJs", I've come across some that are quite good, I'm talking about "DJs for students", the sort that any place trying to attract "students" will hire.

Whether a DJ plays music you like is probably more down to personal taste more than anything else so it would be a bit unfair to rate a DJ purely on that. There are other factors though that you can rate them by.

Say for example:

The DJ is a God
Okay, you still might not enjoy the night if they play music you hate but even then you might still find yourself grudgingly impressed. Mixing, matching, scratching, they add a personal touch to the music you play rather than just a setlist, and will likely have a personal taste so you might hear music you've never heard before, or old favourites in ways you never imagined them. Rare and expensive though...

The DJ has taste
Okay. No fancy tricks like professional scratching and mixing and they might still play tracks you hate, but they've got a personal taste so inbetween "hits" and "classics" you'll come across some fresh tunes/beats that aren't necessarily so mainstream. Even if you think they've got bad taste, you can still respect them for having a taste of their own.

The DJ has no taste
Well, everyone has a taste but this DJ will set it aside for "work". A biological jukebox that will randomly play songs from a "setlist" (that compromises entirely of a set of "hits" and "classics" from a certain "genre") and might take requests. Can't be exciting but some people like their club nights to be kept simple and it's more about "socialising" than hearing new music. And you'll get on just fine if you like the music they play.

The DJ is a TlT!!
With all the deck skills of the tasteless biological jukebox, the DJ decides to "spice things up" by being a radio presenter wannabe. Saying stupid cliché things. This is forgivable inbetween songs but most aren't happy to leave it there - they start interrupting songs. If they just talked over the music in time to it, silly but musical. If they talked with no rhythm over the music then that might be a little annoying but ignorable.

Instead they cut out the music completely to say some retarded cliché.
"Put your hands up"
"Anyone here from Nottingham?"
"We've got xxxxxxx, yyyyyyyy, and zzzzzzz still to come so GET READY!!!!11!!!11111"

The more you love the song, the more you're into it, the more annoying it is when the idiot cuts it off to spew some stupid cliché.

So DJs for "student nights"?
Sometimes just tasteless (even then they still stick to the same "cheese setlist" - but I guess that's a clash with my personal taste rather than with them) but more often than not they're a complete TlT. To be fair, it's places with these muppets that tend to be more successful with the students so perhaps they're like it for good reason, and I know that I don't have to go to all these "student" nights. But when it's the night of choice for so many people around you... it can get annoying at the least.

Ironically, if a place does an "amature night", a showcase of "DJs who are students" there's a chance of genuine quality...
So do these cretins wind you all up as well or do you lot love this whole student "cheese" scene?

I've never understood pop music myself, it's all the same: Dumbed down, instrumentally lacking, boring and aimed at an audience which seems to be more interested in what someone looks like, instead of thier musical prowess (Or severe lack of it, usually hidden by overproduction).

Unsurprisingly, my taste in music is (Mostly) hard rock and metal from roughly 1970-1990...

The only music I've ever liked is rock, i don't understand how people can like pop bands such as S club 7 and so on.

The sad fact is that this is the music that most drunken students want to hear - I doubt most of those DJs would ever listen to that music at home, but at work they appeal to their audience (like Cong_Man says).

If hearing that music all night winds you up (and it certainly does me), you just go somewhere else that isn't so studentfied. Most towns and cities cater for different tastes, you just gotta explore a bit.

Heh, I used to do a bit of DJing when I was at College, to this day, I can mix just about anything and even do some basic scratching. But I quickly discovered that no-one shares my taste in music, so I'd have to stick on cheesy chart hit after cheesy chart-hit. That's about when I packed it in...

I hate people who go on about DJs like they're some kinda of genius. No love, they play other people's music.

DJ at one of the busy pubs near me just plugs a laptop in and plays tunes in winamp.

Seems like a mega easy way to make money of you have a good selection of music.

But there are very few good Dj's around here that actually have a talent in what they do

It hurts how much they get paid.

And they're crap most of the time.

When I go to a club it's a bonus if the music's decent, usually it's fun to get very drunk and take the pee out of 95% of the playlist.

An enjoyable way to let off steam, but I never set out with hopes that decent music will be played.

Metal/Punk places do tend to fair a bit better, although some of the cheaper ones simply stick on some uninterrupted music channel they've paid for - which usually isn't too bad.
