"What Does Stat Mean?"

You know on things like ER on TV or any American medical drama, what does stat mean? As in "nurse get me 50 milligrams of hemahumaglobicide, stat". I mean I know it means do it quick but where does it come from?

When I was little I used to wander what American cartoon charcters meant when they were complimenting each other and said "You've got a lot of spunk"

I think it was something like Recess or Rugrats or something. American cartoon anyway. I suppose that's the way they talk in children's TV!
