Why did no-one inform me?

It's quite good.

The first time I had ever heard the word chav (and hence didn't understand it because I hadn't heard it before) was at college, last year.

I heard the word chav for the first time last year. Up until then, I just called them townies.

It's a short version of Charva, which is a romany term for unruly youth.

It developed into an acronym later?

Damn.

That makes it a gay word.

Ned is still better.

Oh, and "Council Housed And Violent" is what I heard too.

We used to use it as one of the words to describe stealing, but it didn't refer to 'Chav's', we also called them 'Townies'.

I still think it's just a stolen and mutated version of "charver", a northern word for, well, charves/charvers/radgies.

Back when we were 12, people were "proper radgie charvers"

Ah, those were the days...

It's just southern people's inability to pronounce charver properly.
