I heard the word chav for the first time last year. Up until then, I just called them townies.

We used to use it as one of the words to describe stealing, but it didn't refer to 'Chav's', we also called them 'Townies'.
I still think it's just a stolen and mutated version of "charver", a northern word for, well, charves/charvers/radgies.
