I blame NME for most of those 'the' bands that keep cropping up. I remember they called The Datsuns the best new band in the world at one point.

Pink Floyd, The Mars Volta, Idlewild, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Muse, The Doors, RATM, The Beatles, Portishead...
