It's all a fluid advertising scam to merchandise crap to teenagers who think they're part of something:
"You are not straight edge if you have no connection. You are not straight edge if you've never been to a show. if you've never bought a record"
"Keep it alive by being apart of it. By being a consumer. By attending shows, buying merch and records."
I feel sorry for these poor people who are taken in by it all, and think that they're part of something different or special, when in reality they're just advertising and marketing tools - slaves to the music industry - all the while thinking that they're "hardcore" and "sXe" and "edge" words that don't actually mean anything but give them the identity that they so crave. It's sad, really.

Err... what? Taken in by what marketing tools? The Straight Edge hardcore movement has been going over 20 years and started by kids who put out their own records, put on their own shows and made their own t-shirts. There was no music industry releasing their records or marketing anything to them. None of the major labels touched hardcore punk in the early 80s. So they did it themselves.
It was a totally grass roots movement. Slaves to the record industry? Honestly, can you name 1 major record label releasing sXe records or merchandise, even today?
They formed their own cottage industry in the 1980's. While I don't agree with their approach and I've never been straight edge (I drink, like smoking and get irritated by over-earnest vegans personally), you've completely missed the point of what sXe is and what it represents.

Anyway, you guys are a quick to condemn this, as you would, no doubt, any other such 'movement'.
The fact is, as with all these type of 'movement's/cults/whatever you wanna call thems, is that they are like big bandwagons. There's a handful of people driving, who really believe in it and want others to believe in it too.
However, there are a lot more people who jump on the bandwagon, believe in at least some of it, but are mainly just there for the sense of being a part of something.
Leave 'em to get on with it and don't criticise what what you're not a part of, I say...
