The Bends is a very good album. The fact that many enjoy it is due to it's quality, not really due to any 'differences' in their music.
Also, they don't strike me as the sort of band that sit down and say 'right, lets start rolling it in'.

Please agree with me that this was the let's-make-a-really-basic-appealing-to-all-album. To me this is the fan grabbing album, then all the others required you to like what they were doing and therefore start the cult.
