And just to confuse matters, its also possible that your apache is currently configured to not allow public viewing. But make sure you have the IP/port forwarding bit sorted out first before worrying about that.

The 'http://localhost/hello.php' works fine, but i want other people to be able to view the site
If you need to specify a port then the format is http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80/hello.php

Hopefully that's the last of my problems cured
Just run the server, then http://your.ip.number:portnumber/ will direct anyone to your default web folder (default = htdocs in apache dir)
So anything you put in that web folder will be on the internet.
BTW I think the default port number for apache 2.0 is 8080. And I think if it's port 80 you don't need to add it to the URL.
But I'm guessing you know all that already.
