So me and a couple of friends (all late 20s) are off across Europe for 3 weeks in the summer. Paris, Barcelona, South of France, Italy, Prague, Germany. Have you done similar? Do you know these cities well? Any advice, stories, etc, greatly appreciated.

P.S I made this post under 'Life and Everything' because of the (intelligent discussion) part. I don't find much of that elsewhere!

I have no idea how much it set me back as I wasn't paying (thank god) but I can't imagine it was cheap. I think we arrived about 7pm and left post midnight but after wine # 5 it all gets a bit hazy.

No surprise but in Paris the best food they do is French. However its not to everyone's taste but you really should try it. The restaurants I mentioned before are quite simple Bistro's which do very traditional French cuisine.

Theres a great Belgian restaurant called L'Academie de la Bierre (5th district) which has an amazing array of beers from all over the world. Food is reasonably priced and their Moules-Frites is simply stunning.

You can find anything you want really in Paris maybe with the exception of the good old British Curry house. Due to the north african influence in Paris expect to find a lot of decent Moroccan restaurants (there's one in the 9th district but its name escapes me).

Went to a really great nouvelle cuisine place in January - called Au Gourmand which is in the 6th, right opposite Jardins du Luxembourg which is worth a visit too.

Don't forget Switzerland. Bloody gorgeous place, best I've been.

Also bloody expensive, though. Two coffees and a couple of cokes were just shy of a tenner. Ouch.
Good crack, though.

Sounds cool, I can't give much advice really.

I went to Barcelona for a day when I was about 10 with parents. I thought it was excellent even when I was that young, though a man selling watermelons on the subway haunted me for years. Also, I had the best baquette of my life up Las Ramblas somewhere. Nou Camp was amazing... though we walked all the way round it (the wrong way) at about 1pm in the middle of July.

Went to Paris for a few days on a school trip when I was 12/13... during the 1998 World Cup, it was amazing... I still think about that trip often. Eiffel Tower is a must obviously... a fat woman fainted on me at the top.

Have fun.
I was going to travel a bit this Summer but I'm studying in Germany for a year so I'm planing on visiting a few places on the cheap on my holidays.

Travelling rocks

Paris is superb. Have been travelling back and forth 3 or 4 times a year for the last 5 years.

The obvious places to go are great regardless of their popularity. Montmartre is great because you dont have to pay for a view. Le Louvre is superb but dont expect to see it all in a day.

Depending on how long your spending in Paris I would suggest a boat trip on the Seine if your time is limited. Bateaux Mouches is great and its a perfect chance to see things you may not catch on foot.

If you're after something slightly alternative try the Catacombs. A good couple of miles of bones deep under Paris. Its not as well known as the other places but well worth it.

Shopping - try St. Germain des Pres. Great variety of shops frequented by the uber riche. Weekends there are markets dotted all over the place however one of the best I have been to is on Saturday on Place d'Auteuil (16th distric) which is simply stunning.

Food - there is a wealth of great restaurants in Paris that will suit most tastes. If you want something traditional and not too pricey try either Le Petit Troquet (7th district) or Le Polidor (6th district) which has been frequented by many French luminaries. If you want budget try the many chinese take aways dotted all over the place. If you have money to burn I'd suggest L'Astrance (16th district). I had the most amazing 7 course meal there.... different bottle of wine with every course.

Drinking - head up to Place de Clichy and there are tonnes of bars and clubs. Drinking aint cheap in Paris so expect to pay over £5 a pint.

I could go on and on so if you want to know more just let me know.

maybe I just went to the seedy parts! I'm not knocking the place, I had a great time, the Banana Bar was a lot of fun especially.

Actually, I heard Prague is better than A'dam. Less seedy, and less expensive. Anyone been to Prague?
