hehe, but even with that album, it wasn't the mainstream singles that were the best tunes. everyone knew Dammit, but Enthused has one of the best openings of any song i've ever heard.
i think all bands have something somewhere that will grab your attention at some point. hell, even girls aloud caught my attention with part of one of their songs.. but in fairness, it was only a sound effect and you can bet they had jack-all to do with their "creative" direction ;)

yeah, see that's a fine example of the new green day album.
i'm pretty sure they've not done multi-part songs before (no, brain stew/jaded doesn't qualify ;) )... they're like movements in classical music. the songwriting is more ambitious and i think they're better for it. even if they decide that it's not a long term change, at least they tried it.
But the album is very good.
Seeing them live in a few weeks. Gonna be good.
