That's just it, that entire article was based around a handful of mildly amusing anecdotes of the sort you find in droves every day on the internet. If anything needs laughing at, it's the author of that report.

If my Maxtor disk at work makes it through the next six months it'll be a minor miracle, given that it's too hot to touch for more than four or five seconds whilst running (my disks at home, on the other hand, are either stone-cold or lukewarm). One brand of hard disk is as fallible as the next.

Of course, hard-disk failure is entirely the users fault. Head crashes are caused by spyware and dialer software, am i rite guys? Guys???

The manufacturer wouldnt try to recover your data though. Ergo it's worth a shot to get any data back that you havent backed up.
