Your crazy, paper mario 2 is already out, at least in the US. I don't own a gamecube, so I haven't played it though.

I completed it in 14 hours and 22 minutes.
But, if you want t play it, buy it. You don't want to be constrained by time when you're playing it. Get it on ebay or somewhere for about the £30 mark, complete it and sell it on - you'll only lose the price of a rental if you're any good at ebaying

I had a PS2, but it got sold to fund my XBOX.
I can see why people have the PS2 - it offers a huge range of games and stuff in every genre. But if you're going for the killer aps, its got to be the other consoles.
