Obviously it doesn't hurt, but you can feel you jaw moving and of course as you said you get a really nasty noise.
Really though it's not all bad. Thinking about it beforehand is probably a hell of a lot worse than actually having it done, it doesn't take long at all to put the filling in.

They give you the injection and then make you sit in the waiting room for a few minutes while the anastetic numbs your mouth up. Once that's done it's about another 5 minutes in the dentists chair. The actual drilling and stuff takes about 20 seconds maximum, probably not even that.
It took 3 with me and 4 with a friend, and 2 for quite a few more people.
