Latest figures from Japan show the DS sales slowing to a crawl, while PSP keeps on pushing ahead. Infact, although DS was launched in Japan before PSP, the hard fact is that now PSP has overtaken the Nintendo DS.

Units sold
249,000 DS
267,000 PSP

Nintendo need to do some thing fast if they want to stay in the game. In Japan, Nintendo should be able to crush Sony, but it appears they can't, even remembering DS was launched before PSP there.

If the trend is repeated world wide, and Sony PSP continue's to increase it's lead, where will that leave DS? Being pushed into 2nd place world wide is a real possibility now, which would in turn have an effect on developers who want to design for the most used system. Add to that the low number of Nintendo GameCube's, an we have to ask, what is the future for Nintendo?

How many has DS sold since the launch of the PSP? that is the real question.

3736 units is hardly anything to go by in the console wars. So, yes you are picky, or pikey, whatever.

Roughly it's less than a million more.

But that's just me being picky obviously....

What did my AP tell you about using any slight evidence a fanboy gets and ends up exaggerating it? That figure proves it.

I posted them in another post but here's a present to you Macintosh. Here are the sales for the PSP and DS. The first figure is this week, the second is this year and the third is since launch.

Hardware

1. PSP - 74,405 - (267,602) - [749,854] )
3. Nintendo DS - 43,226 - (249,922) - [1,745,518]

Shall I show you again? I think I will.

Hardware

1. PSP - 74,405 - (267,602) - [749,854] )
3. Nintendo DS - 43,226 - (249,922) - [1,745,518]

Miss it? I know I'll show it just one more time, and if you miss it just say, and I'll show it another.

Hardware

1. PSP - 74,405 - (267,602) - [749,854] )
3. Nintendo DS - 43,226 - (249,922) - [1,745,518] .

See the "1" in front of the 700,000 figure on the DS segment? That's means, roughly, the DS has sold over a million more than the PSP.

Not that sales mean anything, but I just like to say.

Nope, the gap has grown almost three fold, not the actual PSP sales. 55 000 x 3 isn't 74 000.

I'm amazed that both companies have sold round numbers of their handhelds.

That's quite a feat.

Erm, that's not out til April so I wouldn't imagine that it will have set Japan alight!

But very true otherwise. The likes of GT4 are to follow though and that will no doubt shift one or two copies...

Nobody can predict the entire outcome of a single piece of hardware against another just by looking at the Japanese sales ratings. Everyone knows how much the Japanese loves technology as much as American's love burgers. We should be looking at the American sales and soon enough the European sales to make a better prediction, the only reason Sony fanboys have made this topic is because they found a pretty inconclusive fact that the PSP is winning against the DS and exaggerate beyond belief so they think its already a win for the PSP.
