Stupid bloody fashion.

A few days ago, despite it being a beautiful day outside and with war raging many miles away, I went grudgingly to the Lakeside shopping centre for a few hours to poke around the shops, generally waste time and money, and get all hot and bothered amongst all the sweaty shopping mad automatons in the giant commercialist greenhouse that is Lakeside. As I shambled into Topman, which over recent times has turned into selling mainly clothing for rude-boys, I had a surprised look on my face when I saw a whole section of what I can only describe as ‘War Chic’ hanging all over the place. Now, I don’t quite know when the shop decided to stock this range of camouflage combat fashion gear, could it have been before or after war in Iraq broke out I wonder? Or are shops like Topman basically cashing in on the whole War Chic idea because war is everywhere at the current time?

This kind of combat clothing stuff has been pretty fashionable down the years with scruffy little urchins with messy hair and scraggy bumfluff beards parading around their local shopping precincts like some kind of psychotic jungle manoeuvres Vietnam veterans with all their combat gear on to mask their apparent nerdiness. Plus, recently it has seen to be “cool” to wear baggy camouflage combat trousers, with celebrities mooching about in front of paparazzi wearing combat chic, so it’s not just sprung up over night because of the war.
But seeing as so many of the population are so against the current conflict in Iraq, are shops like Topman right to flog this sort of stuff to impressionable fashion conscious lemmings, or should they back away a bit and not sell it at all? And more to the point, why would people want to dress as some kind of mock Rambo anyway?

I can just imagine:

Excerpt from memo distributed to Topman executives from just before the war:

“As you may all be aware, war in Iraq is about to break out any day now, so I propose that to increase our lovely great profits, we’ll cash in on the huge media frenzy for war by flooding the market with a range of camouflage fashion items. These items include jackets, trousers, shirts, jerkins, belts, shoes, bandanas and underwear, everything a fashion conscious person requires.
Hopefully, those for the war will buy it and parade around with their combat clothes being patriotic, and those against the war will buy the stuff to burn at protests. Either way we’re quids in.”

Although I was shocked at all that war chic stuff, I think its just stupid high street fashion in generally that annoys me nowadays. I’m sick of walking around places like Lakeside and going in all the men’s clothes shops and being confronted with row after row of the same old generic rude-boy rubbish or blatantly stupid looking clothes that only a prize prat would wear. Are we men really expected to wear all that old toss? Why can’t we have simple but fashionable clothes without having to go into some kind of exclusive gentleman’s outfitter that stocks Alan Partridge style clothes? Why can’t these shops just give us some simple clothes rather than all that rubbish designed by some hotshot pretentious fashion designer who doesn’t know his ****hole from his earhole. Nowadays there’s too many self-appointed fashion gurus telling us what is fashionable and what isn’t, and what most people don’t tend to realise is that these people not only look ridiculous in their own gaudy clothes, but they’re making gullible people dress like complete muppets all for the sake of “fashion”. Do people actually ever look at themselves in the mirror and think, “Oh god, I look completely stupid!” As for that new style denim that looks like it’s been worn by some poor Bangladeshi factory worker who’s rolled around in the dirt for 24 hours non stop, pah! Why do we want to buy clothes that look like they’re worn out? Farmhand chic?

Take this T-shirt for example:
http://www.topman.co.uk/stores/topman space /images/product/TMT88/TMT88-ms.jpg

*Applauds designer* How long did it take for a blind chimp to design that T-shirt?
I’m sick of fashion like that. It’s just blatantly stupid and looks crap (apologies to anyone who actually owns said T-shirt, but if you do, what were you thinking?).
T-shirts with those stupid slogans on annoy me too. Things like “Wasted”, “Frisky”, “I Love Beer” or “Well Hung”, why not just have “I’m a nob” written on it instead and be done with it.

And another thing, why is it that in female clothes shops, they always have a wider and far better looking range of clothes than the male equivalents? And why do us men always have to walk 50 flights of bloody stairs to get to the men’s section?
In 99% of unisex clothes shops like Topman/Topshop, you have to walk through the female section to find the stairs, and when on your travels through the forbidden area, you see some really great looking clothes and a wide variety of interesting looking fashions on display. So it gives me a sinking feeling when after mounting the stairs, I’m confronted with the dullness and small selection of male clothes on display.
The Topman in London (Oxford Street?) is a fine example. I haven’t been there for ages, but the last time I did go there I remember there being about 3 storeys worth of female clothing departments, but only one male one right at the top. I could be wrong, but that’s how it feels some times in terms of what males get to choose from and what wide range of choice there is for females.
I know that decent fashion can be found if you hunt around for it, but it seems nowadays that people are content with dressing up and looking rather stupid in stupidly designed clothes.

I think I may just wear an old sackcloth with a piece of rope tied round it for a belt in the future instead of worrying about what piece of overpriced badly designed rubbish material to waste money on next.

I say again, Stupid bloody fashion.

The only people needing camoflague are soldiers, and possibly birdwatchers. And maybe people who go badger watching in the local woods...

Spot on.

I actually work in Lakeside (Virgin Megastores if you want to come and watch one man keep a store afloat), and have gradually come to despise the place and its inhabitants - I too am fed up with 'war chic' as you put it, as well as those crap trousers with what looks like pieces of rope hanging off them.

I saw a T-shirt the other day

Black, with white text on it saying 'Peace in the Middle East'

£30
why?

Because it had been shot twice, there were 2 bullet holes on it and with it you got the two cases of the bullets that made said damage.

£30 for a tee? I think not.

Think I'll keep my purple dressing gown handy, it'll come into fashion sooner or later.
