Why is it so hard to get quality health care in America and so easy to get good health care in Europe?
If you go furrther back, I think there were tenative steps under Teddy Roosevelt - a progressive Republican- back in the early 20th century, and unions actually opposed moves towards it under Truman in the late 40s as private healthcare was reasonably cheap at the time. I'd imagine that elements of LBJ's "Great Society" would have also been a step in the right direction, but were killed off by 'Nam.
As it stands, however, there's an added problem; healthcare comprises such a large chunk of the US economy that even without the political side to it, any meaningful reform is incredibly difficult - notwithstanding the fact that attempts to extend or regulate coverage bump up premiums and don't impress those who hold it.

Privatisation of healthcare and Republican fearmongering. The purpose of any business is to make money for itself and when you introduce that mentality into healthcare, patient care becomes secondary to profit. As for the reason you've not copied everyone else, Republican muddying the waters, deliberately lying and intentionally confusing socialism for communism.
