I find it much easier to transform from the plane as it's easier to control and auto locks on to fire the machine gun which is a lot better against flying enemies.
But the battles are so repetitive, there's no strategy to it other than fly around firing the lock on missiles all the time, and the transforming potential is wasted, the mode you start a level in is the most effective one to do the level with, hence transforming is a waste of time.
It's okay, but Aquila is by far the better game visually, in terms of control, variety and playability.

Battle Engine Aquila was dire. This is so much better it's unbelievable.
I disagree, I've had this since January and it gets tedious, and boring to be honest. I so wanted this to be good as I'm a huge Macross fan, but it isn't brilliant, and you'd be better off with Battle Engine Aquila.
