The original Mass Effect was an excellent blend of 3rd person shooter and RPG, it had amazing graphics, tense firefights and deep customization and character development all wrapped up nicely in a story that is easily worthy of Hollywood, surely Bioware would be hard pressed to top it? amazingly Bioware pulled it off and improved everything for Commander Shepard's second outing.

The story picks up pretty much where it left off, the Commander and his team are searching for Geth remnants when a mysterious vessel shows up and obliterates the Normandy with ease and Commander Shepard gets blasted into space and sent crashing onto a strange planet, what happens next allows you to create an entirely new character or import your existing one which sadly the PS3 version lacks for obvious reasons.

On your travels you get to explore a wide variety of locations from hub worlds crammed with towering skyscrapers to crime infested space stations which are made all the better thanks to the improved graphics.

As you progress through the game you'll need to recruit an elite team of old friends and new faces alike who each have their own set of upgradeable abilities and seek out upgrades to help you in your fight against the sinister Reapers and the many foes that stand in your way, the combat system has been improved and there's a selection of new weapons to use but there is still a disappointing lack of melee moves, all you can do is hit an enemy with an elbow slam, but the cover system is spot on and you can hide behind just about anything solid and quickly vault over it if you get flanked.

Another welcome addition is the improved Paragon/Renegade system which you fill up by being good or bad, it just adds yet another layer of depth to this massive game and directly affects both your character and the story, be good and you'll heal up quicker and NPCs will react nicely but be bad and you'll get ominous red eyes and your scarring will worsen and NPCs will either be frightened or get angry.

To further customise your character you can change various aspects of your armor like color or material or you can find new parts on your travels, you can also choose your own weapon loadouts before you head out on a mission although unfortunately you need to be a soldier type character to be able to use all weapons on offer.

Despite it's flaws Mass Effect 2 is an unmissable addition to your game collection, if you haven't played it yet you're really missing out, what are you waiting for? go out and get it before 3 gets released!
