Bad Taste, one of Peter Jackson's first films, I finished watching it on YouTube on my iPod Touch a few days ago. It is a low-budget sci-fi horror comedy cult classic movie made in 1987. If you like old cheesy horror comedies with nasty scenes of violence, then Bad Taste is for you. In the first hour of the movie, it was okay but it wasn't that great. But it picked up during the last half hour when they actually got into a battle with the aliens. It does have some funny parts, some of them involve goriness, some people may find that it is so cheesy at some parts it is funny. The parts where they shoot the aliens from a far distance are the parts that look the most fake. Honestly it was different than what I expected it to be, most of the movie only took place in one location.

Plot

The film begins with a man listening to distress call to emergency services stating that "invaders started killing us", at the end of the phone call we hear what sounds like his body being squashed and his screaming. The person listening to the call states "this is a job for real men" and pushes a button. The movie then goes to a paramilitary force made up of four men that were apparently the ones that were called up that are trying to stop alien invaders that want to turn humans into intergalactic fast food, one alien saying later in the movie that humans are the new "taste sensation".

Depictions Of Violence

If you have read about the film or looked at the parental warning on the back of the VHS case of the film, you may have gotten the impression that the film has non-stop over-the-top violence all the time, which is not entirely true. The movie does have some gory parts but it's not that frequent up until the last half hour of the movie, and if you read some of my list of violent scenes in the movie below they may sound worse than they really are.

The gory parts in the movie include but may nor be limited to:

An alien is shot and walks around with part of his head blasted off and then falls down on a man's foot and spills blood on his pants.

A man sticks a gun through an alien's stomach, he then shoves the gun further through his stomach and we then see the end of the gun coming out of the alien's back and the man shoots other aliens with it.

A man shoots an alien in the back of his head and blood splatters out.

A man in a car runs over an alien and he is split in half, afterwards we see what appears to be intestines on the ground.

A man tries to shoot an alien with a bazooka but misses and blows up a sheep.

A chainsaw comes through the wall and goes through the stomach an alien up against it. The chainsaw moves up and eventually cuts his head in half.

Inside the alien spaceship, a man with a chainsaw on a higher floor falls on an alien on the lower floor and goes through his head, cutting through him with the chainsaw, and comes out between his legs.

Would I Recommend This Film?

If you like old cheesy horror-comedy movies, then yes. To me this film was pretty enjoyable especially in as it got further into the film.
