Start Your Engines!
One of the most surprising genres to do well on the iPhone/iPod Touch platform is the racing game. Without a visible control method it would seem initially pointless to release games requiring good control and reactions. But this is where the tilt controls come in to their own.

10.Low Grav 2 – Cobra Mobile
If you’re looking for a Wipeout style game then Low Grav 2 is the game to get. The first title was a bit of a sleeper hit but the sequel has been in top 10 game lists for a while now.

There is no multiplayer but there are plenty of tracks and vehicles to choose from and the game runs at a fair pace with some great track designs seeing you spend a lot of time in the air.

9.Ridge Racer – Namco
When this first came out the controls were all over the place, but now they’ve been fixed the game can be enjoyed as a great port of the PSP handheld version. Tons of tracks and all the over-the-top presentation you’d expect from a Ridge Racer game are all present here, right from the initial movie to the voice telling you you’re in last place (again!). The PSP nitro system (boost to add nitro) is luckily still present and the game as a whole is a well crafted package.

8.GT Racing – Gameloft
GT Racing came out after Real Racing but it’s a similar idea. However, where it differs is that this game attempts to provide real world cars as accurately modelled as possible. It also offers ice and rally races, making it nearer to something like Forza or Gran Turismo.

The wealth of options, including online multiplayer races and over 100 cars, is immense but the odd slowdown on track occasionally spoils an otherwise fantastic game.

Despite this, the overall feel is that Gameloft have provided a massive game stuck inside a small portable device. If you’re after something to rival Gran Turismo PSP then this is probably the nearest you’ll get.

7.Fastlane Street Racing – Atod AB
Fastlane seems at first to be a full on arcade racer in the same camp as Ridge Racer but once you start it up you realise it needs to be taken far more seriously. Amazing lighting effects and some serious competition from rival cars makes this a good middle-of-the-road game between the arcade racers and the more serious Gran Turismo style simulations.

6. Aqua Moto Racing 2 - Resolution Interactive
A water racing game makes a change from all that Asphalt and Aqua Moto Racing 2 hits the spot perfectly. The first game got many good reviews and I’m pleased to say that the sequel (currently on offer on the app store) improves further on these.

Stunts, ramps and 48 courses plus constant updates including iPhone 4 support for HD graphics as a free update. All of this and a really good game to boot. If you enjoyed Wave Race 64 on the Nintendo 64 then this is the game for you.

5.Shrek Kart – Gameloft
The nearest equivalent to Mario Kart on the iPhone and with the bonus of licenced Shrek characters this plays exactly as you’d expect.

The touch controls take a bit of getting used to but once you do it’s a real laugh. Special weapons include Shrek’s noxious gas and a large onion and you can play as a bunch of your favourite characters from the first 2 films.

The game also boasts WIFI and Bluetooth multiplayer events, recapturing some of the magic of multi-racer Mario Kart sessions if you and your friends all have iDevices.

4.Raging Thunder 2 – Polorbit
A no-holes-barred aracade racer that will suit any fan of Ridge Racer or Asphalt. The game looks good and plays brilliantly right from the off. The tracks are probably some of the most varied available in this list with temples, mountains and beaches ringing to the sound of your engine. Pickups include nitros, repairs and money to buy new upgrades for your car.

Multiplayer is covered by online and local play too and there’s a worldwide leaderboard to help you achieve that ultimate accolade of being king of the world.

Only the steering gets in the way, it’s a bit too tricky to start off with but once you get used to it the twichy controls are easier to use.

3. Ferrari GT: Evolution - Gameloft
33 different Ferraris for you to try out is enough to get some people’s attention, but then add in a game from the developer responsible for some of the best racing titles on the system and you have a winning game.

Ferrari GT can’t always work out whether it’s a serious racer or an arcade racer, powerslides are still slightly over the top but presented in a more realistic way with the ability to steer out of them. However, it’s well presented and the tracks are fun to drive, plus it looks stunning at times and all the models have a different feel to them.

2.Need For Speed Undercover – EA
While NFSU failed on consoles thanks to too many bugs, the iPhone version succeeds in being a fun game with plenty of set pieces and cop chases. The graphics are pretty, especially when it comes to the triggered special stunts which slow down the action and provide a movie style event, Backgrounds have real-time weather effects and streets look highly detailed.

Speaking of movies, the live action sequences are all included here, pretty impressive for a handheld title. They help to give the game a professional polished feel.

1.Real Racing – Firemint
Real Racing has been on the app store for ages, but it still holds the number one slot in racing games. It was recently updated for iPhone 4 HD Retina Display and also makes use of the iOS4 update to improve the 3GS graphics. The game looks so good it is constantly used to advertise the iPad and iPhone 4 to customers.

All the standard options for racing games are present; Career, time trials, quick race and online racing. In fact, this is one of the easiest games to get connected and race other players. The iPad version is an amazing game to play multi-player against friends; it’s worth going in to an Apple store just to have a game.

I have, it's on my phone at the moment. I got it when it came out.

Graphically, it's pretty good and they've retained most of the gameplay while simplifying the destruction. Compared to the 360 version (which I also have) it's not as good and the main issue is that it's still very hard to avoid objects, even if you're on the other side if the road. But it's still a fun little alternative to straight up racing.
