Anyway it was probably just an exercise by Google to further their own browser's market share.
Even .net are on the bandwagon for seeing off IE6 http://www.bringdownie6.com!

It's weird, IE6 took a backseat in priority up until the China-Google spying fiasco. Too many businesses and government institutions, small and large, are using them as the default browser, and despite all its flaws it "just worked" so the majority couldn't be arsed with the upgrade. Of course, managers being who they are, certainly didn't see the point of allocating funds and downtime to upgrade their systems when nothing major was happening. It takes something serious like a complete software failure - or maybe the above spying case - for them to roll in action.
Maybe we'll see FF on government machines by the end of 2020.
