is it possible to work out the mean of grouped data? if it is i need someone to show me how to get the mean for this table.
Range.....Broadsheet....Tabloid

the table is how many word there are in a sentence in a tabloid newpaper and a broadsheet newpaper
Im sorry its so unclear... but im so confused by this i asked my brother and mother but they don't know how do do it either.

You should divide by the total frequency for that row.
For example, the total frequency for tabloid is 6 + 6 +7 + 4 + 5 + 2
For tabloid I get an average of ~13.5 but there are some rounding errors in that due to the fact I ignored the decimal places.

But what you do, I seem to remember, is either learn to use your calculator's stats mode or, by hand, you take the mid point of each of the groups (half way between the upper and lower boundary of that group - for 1.5 to 5.5 it's going to be 3.5), then multiply the midpoint by the frequency of that set (record this in a new column), and then you add that column up and divide by the total frequency of everything.
Though it's been 3 years since I did that now and I could be wrong.
