Montoya magic in hard fought victory

The first race in Europe began with qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix and somewhat unsurprisingly, it rained. It was Montoya who took pole position with a stunning lap, ahead of the MG of De La Rosa. It's Montoya's 3rd career pole position, his first in San Marino.

3rd on the grid was Raikkonen ahead of the relentless Renault of Barrichello. Button continues his good qualifying form with 5th. Firman keeps Jordan in the top 8 with 6th. Williams have both cars in the top 8 with Sato in 7th and Pizzonia keeps his chances of more points in sight with 8th.

Full Qualifying Results:

1st Montoya (Afrojoe) 1m38.367s

So, the San Marino Grand Prix got underway and after the initial shuffling of the pack off the grid, overtaking proved very difficult. It would mean strategy would be key and it seemed the majority of the drivers were running two stop strategies in perfect racing conditions.

Montoya held off the early advances of De La Rosa, who quickly lost out to Barrichello, who had now picked up 2 places off the start. Montoya and Barrichello were quick and opened up a bit of a gap to De La Rosa, who seemed to be holding up a few cars behind him.

Alonso was the first to crack under pressure when he went off the track and slipped to last on lap 2. Ralf Schumacher ran off the track on lap 4 but only lost a couple of places. The quick runners were trying hard to overtake but it seemed like all the overtaking would have to be done in the pit lane.

After the first round of stops, Klien ran off the track from a solid 8th place on lap 23 to slip outside the top 8. It was on lap 30 when an error creeped into the car of Pizzonia and he ran off the track, putting a points place in jeopardy.

The first retirement was on lap 34 when De La Rosa, losing places after the first stop and holding up more cars, was forced to retire when his engine blew up in a burst of flames. Verstappen ran off the track on lap 36 and started getting dragged into a midfield battle.

Retirement number 2 saw Webber pull off onto the grass with transmission problems on lap 47. A flurry of off track excursions followed as drivers pushed hard in the last 15 laps. Ralf Schumacher, Firman and Karthikeyan all ran off between laps 48 and 51, Karthikeyan numerous times.

Then, the most dramatic incident of the race occured. Raikkonen, now sitting in 3rd place, struggling a bit for pace near the end of the race, was holding up a train of at least 5 cars. Raikkonen came out of the last chicane too fast and it was good car control to keep it out of the wall. Unfortunately, it resulted in a spin across the track, in front of the train of 5. Everyone managed to squeak by, except World Championship leader Pizzonia, who clipped Raikkonen and resulted in a dramatic barrel roll down the pit straight. Both Raikkonen and Pizzonia had to retire on lap 56. The debris from the incident also affected Michael Schumacher, who hit the debris and needed a new front wing.

B.A.R saw a potential big score of points disappear in the last 3 laps. Pantano managed to slow his car down after it developed a brake problem but it was retirement for him on lap 60. On the last lap, Button in a comfortable 3rd place, spun and slipped to 8th but still managed to pick up his first point of the season.

The race was on for the victory with Montoya and Barrichello, barely seperable during the whole race, fighting hard for the win. Montoya had managed to edge out a 2 second lead but Barrichello was clawing it in. Barrichello couldn't find a way by and Montoya went on to win.

Montoya's victory was his 4th career win, first in San Marino and the second driver in 4 years to win at San Marino from pole position. Barrichello could only match Montoya's raw pace and had to settle for 2nd. Sato made it a 1-3 for Williams with 3rd. World Champion Baumgartner finally gets off the mark with 4th place. Fisichella has now finished 5th 3 times out of the 4 races this season. Klien goes one place better than Brazil with 6th. Firman continues Jordan's consistent running with 7th and Button will only wonder what could have been and finishes 8th.
