In Windows ME and possibly older OS there was an option within windows to add a background picture to a folder, for example you open 'my music' then a picture of your choice behind the icons appeared. The option has been taken out of Windows XP.

I was wondering if anyone knows a way of doing it in XP? or a program I could use?

*just re-read you question, and realised it's not actually what you were after, but someone might find it useful*

In XP if you name an image 'folder.jpg' then this image will be displayed in the folder icon when looking at a group of folders in thumbnail view.

Works well with music and you put an album cover image as folder.jpg, or for collections of photos etc.

Windows MP also uses the image, and can use smaller images -
google: folder.jpg xp for more...

Wow, I'd never noticed that was missing. I never really used it before, but I knew it was there in 98 - it's odd they didn't put it in Windows XP when they're going for the whole theming idea.

Try googling for a program to help you.

Just had a quick look, and Windowpaper XP seems to be what you're after: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windowpaper-XP.shtml

It mentions that it's only simplifying a feature already existing in Windows XP, suggesting there is a way to do it from within Windows, though it may not be pretty...
