OK, one of my housemates had loads of spyware on his laptop. Me being the good guy that I am, downloaded AdAware and got rid of it all so he no longer has any of these annoying adverts or dialers that he used to have.

Only problem is now he can't connect to the internet anymore!

The computer connects through a router and it ~was~ as easy as plugging it in and having it work, but now it no longer works.

I went into the network connections bit, opened the LAN connection which said that it was connected then clicked repair. I was greeted by a lovely screen telling me that it could not renew the IP address.

All the other computers just require a cable to be plugged in. This one seems to have been altered by something so that the connection no longer works.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried setting the network gateways to your router and made sure no proxy settings were left in internet options?

What does typing ipconfig at the command line tell you?

You could just try resetting the router to factory settings or something?

Made sure there's no firewall?

Made sure AA didn't delete any important 'ware?

Did you quarantine everything / make backups?

That wouldn't do anything.

As I said, all the other PCs (and this one before) just required the network cable to be plugged in and the internet then worked.

After the spyware was deleted, the network no longer works.

I'm gonna check over the settings to see if they've been changed (compare them to this laptop) otherwise it might just be a case of reformatting.

What router have you got and have you run the Internet Setup Wizard?

All that's done.

I'll have another go at sorting it this afternoon then I'll get back to you.

Try changing all the TCP/IP settings to automatic configuration?
