Every few days my family's pc spontaneously decides to shut down.

It gives me a 30 second warning, claims to be initiated by "NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM" (We run Win XP, if that's relevant).
It explains that the cause was that "the Remote Procedure Protocol (RPC) terminated unexpectedly".

Anyone know whether this is a virus or a genuine fault, and (for either scenario) what I can do about it?

As the rest of my family use the computer, I can't know what people may have unwittingly downloaded.

Thanks

It's the blaster worm (or variant of). If it happens again, type "shutdown -a" at the command prompt (or in Start->Run) to abort the shutdown. Then use a virus scanner (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/), fix the problems it identifies, then run Windows Update.

For the love of god people, please run Windows Update.

Run windows update a few times, its a kind of virus yeah, send a certain signal to a specific port on an XP machine, and it will shut down. Microsoft have since solved this with a patch.
